Dien Bien Airport

Dien Bien airport is located in Thanh Truong ward, Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province in the Northwest of the country, where the famous battle of Dien Bien Phu was taken place. Dien Bien Airport ( formerly Muong Thanh Airport ) used to be a temporary airbase in 1954, a logistical base is very important in the group of Dien Bien Phu bases of the French.

Dien Bien airport is a civil airport combined with military flight operation, in the basin of Dien Bien Phu, in the Northwest of Vietnam, 300 kilometers away from Hanoi capital in northwestwards. It is bounded by Dien Bien city in the southeast and the Vietnamese-Laos borders in the west.

Dien Bien airport was built by the French from the 40’s of the 20th century. At that time, Dien Bien airport was in the system of mountainous airports for the political purposes to control the northwest highland, consolidate the domination of the French in Indochina and protect the frontier of the northern Indochina.

Dien Bien airport plays as an important role in aligning Hanoi capital, other regions and international friends with Dien Bien province; holds a key position in development strategy of socio-economy and national defense.

At present, Vietnam Airlines is operating air routes from Hanoi – Dien Bien – Hanoi with the frequency of 4 flights per day.
