But Thap pagoda is recognized as one of the country’s most important cultural relics. The pagoda was built under the dynasty of King Tran Thanh Tong (1258-1278), and rebuilt in 1647 in the Le Dynasty by the Chinese Zen Buddhist priest Zhus Zhus (Chuyet Chuyet in Vietnamese). According to legend, when Chuyet Chuyet was leaving his pagoda on the north bank of the Duong River, he saw a flock of swallows suddenly swoop down and perch on the ground of the southern bank. He decided to rebuild his pagoda there, and named it Ninh Phuc Tu, meaning “peace and blessing.”
