Tram mountain

Tram Mountain is located in Phung Chau Commune, Chuong My District, about 20km from Hanoi city’s center. It is an ideal place for weekend gateways and day trips from Hanoi.

In ancient times, the brightest and finest star of the heavens, Tu Vi, suddenly fell from the sky and has transformed into a mountain. The local people named it Tram mountain. In 1669, a text was carved in the stone half way up its walls. The mountain was then called Mountain Long Chau or Mt. Phat Tich (the mountain embracing relics and traces of the Buddha).

Tram mountain is indeed a precious gift of nature. Enamored with the beautiful landscape of Tram mountain, in 1516 King Le Chieu Tong had a royal stopover pavilion built and ordered the digging of canals and clearing of streams around the mountain for dragon-boat rides whenever he was free from national affairs.

Quite a few religious structures such as altars and shrines, temples and pagodas were built during following dynasties. As a result, today, many architectural vestiges of different times are found, such as the Pagodas of Long Tien, Quan Yin, Vo Vi and Ba Lang, the Cao Son Temple, Mother’s Temple, stone-slab pavilions and towers.

Due to the wear of ages and the devastation of wars and nature, some of the architectural relics could not be kept intact and others lie in ruins such as the tower and little temple on the southwestern slope of the mountain.

Tram Gian pagoda

Tram Gian Pagoda nestles in the shade of centuries old pine trees in Tien Lu Village, only 20km southwest from central Hanoi. The pagoda, founded in 1185 during the reign of King Ly Cao Tong, is also known as Quang Nghiem, Tien Lu or Nui and has undergone various forms of reconstruction and restoration over time. Take a day bike tour from Hanoi, cycling on the back roads to discover the temple as well as its surrounding rural villages.

Legend has it that during the Tran dynasty (1225-1400) in Boi Khe Village, a woman dream of the Buddha’s birth after which she herself fell pregnant and bore a son. Nine years later, after the deaths of his parents, the boy left home to study Buddhism at the local Dai Bi Pagoda. At 15, while visiting Tien Lu, he fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and called on the head monk of a mountain pagoda to teach him sutras. After 10 years, the young man mastered Buddhism and became famous. Aware of his reputation, the Tran King invited him to a pagoda in Thang Long Citadel and gave him the venerable name Duc Minh. Following the death of the head monk at Tien Lu Pagoda, Duc Minh returned to his village and built a new one. At the age of 95, the monk locked himself in a wooden chamber, saying good-bye to his disciples and freed his soul. 100 days later, his disciples opened the chamber, finding his scented remains which later was preserved in a tower (stupa) and worshipped as that of Saint Boi.

The pagoda includes the Gia Ngu house which overlooks a lotus pond and is used to accommodate the saintly palanquin from which the water puppet performance is viewed. Its second structure comprises blue marble steps and a two-storey bell-tower, built in 1693.

The tower includes eight elegantly curved corner roofs and banisters on four sides complete with cloud and floral motives. Its columns are carved with intricate lotus shapes as well as wood panels in the shapes of dragons, flowers, leaves, clouds and the sky. Below the roof hangs a copper bell cast in 1794. It is 1.4m in height, 0.6m in diameter and includes a chiselled poem by Phan Huy Ich.

The pagoda preserves a collection of 153 Buddha statues, mostly of wood except for some made of terra cotta and ceramics. The most precious among them include the Tuyet Son Buddha, carved out of black jack-tree wood, and the statue of Admiral Dang Tien Dong, a military mandarin of the Tay Son insurgent troop who contributed to the renovation of the pagoda after his victory against Qing in 1789.

A statue of Saint Boi is also preserved in a wooden room.

Other relics include a stone dragon of the Tran dynasty made as a banister, many Mac dynasty bricks used to build the Tam The statues (The Buddha of the Past, Present and Future) as well as paintings and bas-reliefs depicting animals and Arhats.

To commemorate Saint Boi, an annual festival is held at the pagoda on 4th-6th day of the first lunar month. Highlights include a procession of the Saint’s palanquin, a vegetarian cooking contest and many popular folk games such as human chess, wrestling and water puppetry.

Thay pagoda

Thay Pagoda, one of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam is located at the foot of Sai Son mountain in Quoc Oai district, Hanoi. The temple was established in the 11th century during the reign of Ly Nhan Tong of the Ly dynasty. It is dedicated to Vietnamese Thien master Tu Dao Hanh (1072-1116). Take a day bike tour Hanoi, cycling on the back roads to visit Thay pagoda as well as its surrounding villages.

The pagoda is divided into three parts. The entrance hall is the prayer hall. The middle chamber has images of Buddhas surrounded by demons, made of lacquer and garbed in red-coloured attire. The back chamber has statues of the monk.

The temple has three dedications: to King Ly Than Tong (1127 to 1138), to Gautama Buddha and his eighteen arhats and to the Buddhist monk and Thien master Tu Dao Hanh. It is built in a typical Vietnamese architectural style. The main prayer hall of the temple has nearly 100 colourful images of different period. At the entrance to the shrine there are two large clay mixed papier-mâché images of the 7th century, each weighing about a ton; these are considered the largest such images in Vietnam.

The main hall contains the temple’s oldest image, dating from the temple’s foundation: a triptych of Buddha and disciples dating from the 16th century on a high pedestal. There is a 13th-century statue of bodhisattva seated on a lotus throne, which is a wooden statue draped in yellow. It was made in the likeness of the master Dao Hanh in a pensive mood. The statues of Tu Dao Hanh and his reincarnation in the form of Ly Thanh Tong are located in the hall next to each other.

Within the same temple complex there is a small shrine referred to as the “old temple”. It was founded by King Ly Thai To in 1132 and has been renovated several times.

There are two arched bridges connecting to the pagoda. Built in 1602, they are named Sun and Moon. One of these bridges leads to a small island, home to a small Taoist temple representing the elements of earth, air, and water. The second bridge leads to a limestone hill. Dao Hanh, during the last stage of his life, had walked up to this place and disappeared in a cave. This cave is located in the middle of roots of banyans and is hemmed between a small temple built in honour of the monk’s parents and a small pagoda. Both these are religious places from where there are lovely vistas of the entire valley. There is also a limestone grotto known as the hang Cac Co, “the Mischievous”.

Tay Phuong pagoda

Tay Phuong Pagoda is located in Yen Village, Thach That District, Hanoi. This is the exhibition of national engraving and sculpture masterpieces. We at Lotussia offer Hanoi day trips, half day tours offering you the chance to discover, at your own pace the pagoda as well as its surrounding rural villages. Cycling on the back roads to visit one of the most beautiful pagoda in Vietnam.

The pagoda was built in the 8th century and has been restored several times since. In 1632, the pagoda was rebuilt according to the Sino-Vietnamese character Tam (three), featuring three sections: the upper sanctuary, back palace, and lobby rooms.

In 1794 under the Tay Son regime, it was completely renewed, hence its present design. It comprises three successive constructions: the Hall of Prostration, the Main Shrine, and the Sanctuary, all with doubletiered roofs. It seems that this architectural arrangement is inspired by Buddhist and Confucianist thought: the three constructions symbolize the three forces governing the world.

The central construction has a directing role and is consequently raised higher than the others. It symbolizes Heaven. The construction at the rear plays the role of a foundation: it symbolizes the earth. The construction closest to the world of man stands in front. The whole structure is the symbol of Thai Cuc (the Prime Principle, from which the whole world derives). The double tier of the roof symbolizes the double principle, Luong Nghi, yin and yang. The slopes, the roof on the four sides symbolize the four elements of heaven, Tu Tuong; the sun, moon, stars and deities, while the slopes on the eight sides stand for the Eight Signs of the Sacred Octagon (Bat Quai).

All the wooden parts of the pagoda are beautifully sculpted following folk motifs: mulberry leat Ficus leat lotus flower, chrysanthemum; dragon, phoenix, etc. But the Tay Phuong Pagoda is mostly famous for the statues it contains, magnificent wooden sculptures representing Buddhas as well as Vajrapanis (Kim Cuong) and Arhats (La Han) who are middle-ranking Buddhist deities. One in particular portrays Sakyamuni in meditation at the foot of Tuyet Son (Snow Mountain). He was then leading a life of extremely severe ascetics, and his emaciated body, as represented by the statue, shows good knowledge by the artist of human anatomy. The figures of the Arhats each bear distinctive features which depict meditation in original aspects. All are impressive works of art.

Map

Son Tay citadel

Son Tay Citadel is located in Son Tay town, about 40km from Hanoi city center. It was an ancient military rampart built with laterite.

Son Tay Citadel was erected in 1822. It had a style of Vauban architecture with a square shape, 400m in length and 5m in height. The citadel’s wall was 4m in width and there were many holes at the top of the wall for the soldiers to hide inside the citadel to shoot or attack their enemies using spears or broadswords.

The Son Tay citadel had four gates facing east, west, south and north, namely the Front (Tien), the Back (Hau), the Right (Huu) and the Left (Ta). Each entrance has a guard tower. In the past, the citadel was surrounded by a 20m-wide, 2,000m-long moat that connected to the Tich Giang River at the southwestern corner of the rampart. The major architectural axle linked the Front and Back Gates.

Far from the citadel was La Thanh – the outside wall – which was built with mud, 3.5m high, in the shape of pentagon. It was surrounded by a spine of bamboo hedges and had four entrances facing four directions. Part of the remaining La Thanh is now La Thanh Road.

Inside the citadel were important structures that were built symmetrically on the central South-North axle. In the middle was Vong cung nu where the king could rest and mandarins in the area annually organized offering rites or bowed from a distance when they received the royal decrees.

In front of Kinh Thien Palace was a large brick-paved courtyard. Outside the entrance was a screen built with bricks and engraved with the image of “long van khanh hoi” (dragons and clouds). Next was Doan Mon with three gates looking to the Ky dai (flagpole), 18cm high, built on a large laterite platform.

To the west was Vo Mieu built to worship those who laid down their lives to protect the citadel. At the four corners of the citadel were four square wells, 6m in depth, that have steps built by laterite leading to the wells’ bottom. Nearby were residential buildings and the law courts of the provinces’ mandarins. In the east, there was a prison, a food store and the residences of the wives of the soldiers in the citadel.

In his reminiscences written in April 1884, Charles Edouard Hocquard, a French military doctor, described in detail the architecture of the Son Tay Citadel. He wrote: “…In the middle of the citadel was an 18m high flagpole. The remaining part was the royal corridors, residential buildings of the provinces’ mandarins and a food store. In front of the flagpole were two large square cisterns with their surroundings built with bricks with handrails. Many people said that one of the cisterns had been used to contain water for soldiers and the other for raising fish to serve as a food.”

In 1884, the French military army occupied the citadel and in 1924, Martial Henri Merlin, Governor-General of French Indochina, issued a decree to rank the ancient citadel as a relic. In December 1946, the Government of Vietnam Democratic Republic held an important meeting in the citadel.

After nearly 200 years, most of the Son Tay Ancient Citadel has been destroyed by wars and time and only a few relics are left, including some stretches of the citadel walls, the citadel gates, guard towers, Kinh Thien’s Palace grounds, wells and two cannons.

Perfume Pagoda – Hanoi

We have a wide range of cars, SUV, MPV, and mini vans to rent out at affordable rates, offering you the chance to explore this attraction with ease.

Map

Perfume pagoda

The Perfume Pagoda is a vast complex of Buddhist temples and shrines built into the limestone Huong Tich mountains. It is the site of a religious festival which draws large numbers of pilgrims from across Vietnam.

The centre of the Huong Temple lies in Hương Sơn Commune, Mỹ Đức District, former Hà Tây Province (now Hanoi). The centre of this complex is the Perfume Temple, also known as Chua Trong (Inner Temple), located in Huong Tich Cave.

It is thought that the first temple was a small structure on the current site of Thien Tru which existed during the reign of Lê Thánh Tông in the 15th century. Legend claims that the site was discovered over 2000 years ago by a monk meditating in the area, who named the site after a Tibetan mountain where Lord Buddha practiced asceticism. A stele at the current temple dates the building of a terrace, stone steps and Kim Dung shrine to 1686, during the reign of Le Hy Tong, at around the same time that Chua Trong was being constructed. Over the years some of the structures were damaged and replaced. The original statues of Lord Buddha and Quan Am were cast from bronze in 1767 and replaced with the current statues in 1793. More recently, damage was done during both the French and the American wars. Both the gate and the bell tower at Thien Tru Pagoda were destroyed, the bell tower rebuilt in 1986 and the gate completed in 1994.

The many Pagodas that make up Chua Huong are spread out among the limestone hills and tropical forests in the area of Huong Mountain.

Den Trinh

Approaching from the Day River, one will first come across Den Trinh (Presentation shrine), also known as Den Quan Lon (Shrine of High-ranking Mandarin), built to worship one of the generals of a Hung King. This large shrine has a gate with two kneeling elephant statues on each side.

Thien Tru Pagoda

Beyond Den Trinh is Thien Tru (Heaven Kitchen) Pagoda, also known as Chua Ngoai (Outer Pagoda). Here one will find Vien Cong Bao Stupa, a brick structure where Ch’an Master Vien Quang, who led the reconstruction of the pagoda, is buried. Thien Thuy stupa, a naturally occurring structure that is the result of the erosion of a rocky hill, is also nearby.[1] Thien Tru is also home to a bell tower and Hall of the Triple Gem, last restored in the 1980s. Inside the Pagoda there is a large statue of Quan Am Nam Hai.

Giai Oan Pagoda

On the route from Thien Tru to Huong Tich cave is Giai Oan Temple, also called ‘Clearing Unjust Charges’ Pagoda. Here there is a pond called Thien Nhien Thanh Tri (Natural Blue Pond), also called Long Tuyen Well, and Giai Oan stream, with its 9 sources.

Huong Tich Cave

The center of the Chua Huong complex, Huong Tich Cave houses Chua Trong (Inner Temple). The mouth of the cave has the appearance of an open dragon’s mouth with Chu Nho characters carved in a wall at the mouth of the cave. The characters (Nam thien de nhat dong) are translated as “the foremost cave under the Southern Heavens” and the carving is dated to 1770. The words are attributed by some to the ruler of that time, Thinh Do Vuong Trinh Sam. Inside the cave there are many statues. There is a large statue of Lord Buddha, as well as one of Quan Am, both made of a green stone. Quan Am’s “left leg is stretched out and the foot lies on a lotus flower, her right leg is bent and is supported by a lotus flower with supple leaves; a hand holds a pearl.” There are also statues of Arhats and various other figures. Among the naturally occurring features of the cave are numerous stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are worn smooth from years of rubbing by visitors to the cave.

Other sites included in the Chua Huong complex are Thien Son Pagoda, Thuyet Kinh Grotto, Phat Tich Temple, and Vong Temple.

Saint Giong temple

Saint Giong temple is located in Ve Linh commune, Soc Son district, about 30Km from Hanoi down town.

According to the legend Saint Giong this was the place where flew back to heaven on his horse after defeating foreign invaders.

The most important feature of the temple buildings is the main altar, made from a mixture of clay, sugarcane juice, paper and lime It is unique in Vietnam and forms the shape of the mountain ranges surrounding the complex. Seven statues are worshipped at the temple. The back of the altar opens into a cave, that can be explored if you enter from the left and exit from right.

Stopping in the middle of the cave and looking towards the statue of Saint Giong, visitors should take a deep breath to receive the “holy” air from the back of the statue.

Mid way up Hon Da Trong Mountain there is a big white stone, cleft in two, that locals believe is Saint Giong’s amour, at the peak I admire the view and am told a statue of Saint Giong will be placed in time for the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of Thang Long-Hanoi in 2010.
